FLASH: Plugin detection also tab focus questions

Hi Flash Gods and Godettes.


question 1) Plugin Detection:


I'm doing site research today - browsing around looking for everything good

- and I am astounded how many sites have flash detection methods which are

useless. I know I have the most recent flash plugin installed in each of my

browsers on each of my computers, yet many many sites will tell me I need to

install the plugin. Some sites are checking for the flash 3 plugin and

sailing right past the flash 4 plugin.


I know there are several methods for plugin detection - I have attempted

without sucess to get the Macromedia technotes recipe for a getURL movie to

work remote although I can get it to work locally (no, its not the server.

other flash stuff works there) - and I have read and forwarded every

javascript version to the guy I work with who figures this kind of thing

out.


All I can think of is something I noticed and didn't pursue in IE Mac at

xmas time when I was making my own lame flash greeting card. I would have

trouble loading the .swf if there was ANY return in the html anywhere. Think

this is the problem?


Is there a foolproof method? Can someone outline just what might be

happening when a plugin sniffer sniffs nuthin? (the site which inspired this

letter is www.appliedcom.com, although there were a half dozen other which I

didn't bookmark)


question 2) Disabling Tab focus:


There was a brief discussion about tabbed order last week, with links to the

appropriate MM technote. The question I have is a little different, but

related. Outside of a keypress handler disabling the tab key entirely (dunno

if I can even do that - haven't tried), is there any way to disable tab

focus? Did a lot of searching for this and found nothing.
