Not the same. Shockwave is an older technology (for Macromedia) for

displaying content from either Director or Authorware in a web browser.

Both the above were originally designed for creating disk based content

(hard, floppy. then CD). 'Shocked' files from the above apps. were

compressed for the web. Later in the story, Macromedia bought

FutureSplash, a vector based animation program with its own web plug-in

player. To stamp its version of this player with its own brand, MACR

renamed it 'ShockWaveFlash'.


Recently, MACR has began bundling the flash player with the shockwave

player, turning what was once an easy ~400k plug for flash into a

multi-megabyte download.


It would be simpler, on the one hand, to simply merge the two. On the

other hand, your client's plug-in download is now much more of a chore

for folks on a dial-up connection, maybe not so great for those who

don't own Director and who just wanna make flash content...


The small flash only player is still available, however (last I

checked).
