Subject: RE: FLASH: MP3 and Flash size problem URGENT

F4 fla size is unavoidably large using mp3

mostly use MIDI, occasionally mp3 when we have special-interest audience
with a large proportion of broadband (believe it or not 50% of the 24,000
bikers at the Love Ride appeared to have broadband)

http://sun4.com/loveride.html

that site uses a 3 meg mp3, converted to & imported as an a 15 meg aiff
(mono--stereo was 30 megs) about 10 megs per minute of music, this a 3 min
piece

flash at 16 bits (lowest rate to deliver acceptable sound quality) reduces
file to 300k roughly---now that's compression!

this still takes just over a minute to load on dial-up, though only a couple
of seconds on dsl

no way to avoid long publishing time

we're still using F4 on G3 300 with 320 RAM + virtual memory on as fla has
so many images that flash seems to require at least 450 RAM to function

friend on G4 using F5 reports that import of mp3 took forever, which was not
true of the aiff on F4

fla is huge (21 megs) --- swf is huge (6 megs, all but the 300k are 170
quality photo images) but it plays on dial-up without stalling unless
someone clicks through too quickly

stalls badly on macs with low ram or low memory allocation to browser

nothing is perfect & one will never please everybody

the way of the web

cheers
