1. EDITOR'S CORNER:

Flashers,

Firstly, I'd like to thank all subscribers for your patience and understanding
while this (late) issue of the zine cooked to completion. I won't release the
zine until I feel it is absolutely worthy of a place in your Inbox.

So in interest of improvement, I have decide to produce 2 versions of the
zine.

1. Email edition - What you are reading now
This edition will be sent out weekly. It will contain content suitable for
email
(news, tips and tricks, etc.) It should arrive every tuesday or so.

2. Web edition - Found at: http://www.flasher.net/zine/3/
This edition will be placed on the website, and contain the more involved
content
that is too long to put in the email edition. This is also the place I get
to have
fun with Flash. Since its more involved, this edition will come out twice a
month.

Since the web edition will sometimes mirror the email edition (news, sites,
etc.), email
subscribers will be given premium content. (Otherwise, why subscribe?) This
content will
be tips, tricks, and tidbits mined from Flashpad. The collection will be
called 'Babble', a type
of 'ear on the buzz'. Flashpad has grown to become I couldn't imagine it
when I started Flashpad
a year ago, but this place has created a little community. And with this
community comes
wisdom, encouragement, flames, gabo-worship, etc.) So here is a microscope
on the Flashpad community.

I hope you enjoy the zine. Email me if you have any suggestions or ideas:

EXTRACT MOVIE CLIPS FROM FLASH MOVIES!

Burak is Back! He's latest swiffer, Hercules, can probe a file
and extract movie clips from it. These movie clips are then saved as a
separate .swf file. This provides a handy way to study those more
complicated movies you may have lying around in your cache. Be sure to

provide your feedback to burakkatusa [dot] net (mailto:burakkatusa [dot] net).

FIRST FLASH GEN APP FLASH MENU 1.1

One Flash Menu coming up! First a wave of .swf utility tools and now the
first trickle of a Flash Generator app. Greg's FlashMenu allows you to
create hierarchical based menu items. You enter the items you want in a
menu, and then Flash Generator cranks out a menu for you. Its kinda rough,
but that is precisely why Greg put it out: to get Flasher's feedback.

SOUNDS! SOUNDS! SOUNDS!

I created a folder within SOURCE called 'sounds'. Feel free to upload
and download sounds from it. I'd like to start a collection of useful
fx, loopable sounds, wacky clips, etc. that we can all use in our movies.
However, beware that using copyright material is not cool and will probably
get you in big trouble. So, it would be best if we tried to keep it as
'royalty free' as possible. Shouts go to Bigfoot for kicking off the
collection with a two meg zip file(!). Inside you will find several wave
files with cool musical loops. Some pretty nice ones too. Anyhow, upload
your toons. (BTW anyone know any cool music clip art companies? Where
do DJs get their stuff?)

YET ANOTHER SCREENSAVER: SCREENWORX

Yet another Flash screensaver project has arisen. This one
by Andrew from ScreenWorx. Here's what he had to say
about it:

"I will be selling customized screen savers in that I mean the
player will only be able to play the file I specify. Creation of
the flash content is also available or people can simply send
the completed movie (SWF, EXE or AVI) and I will create the
screen saver and customize the install and setup options. I
will also have a shareware version with the usual nag screens
and it will be limited to a certain length movie."

They don't have a website yet, so be sure to email Andrew
(scrworxaticon [dot] co [dot] za (mailto:scrworxaticon [dot] co [dot] za))

FLASH GEN BETA 2 (HELLO MAC)

Beta 2 of Flash Generator is out. This version lets Mac users
get in on the fun. Mac users can now create template files
and generate them off-line. To deploy them online, they will
still have to use NT or the upcoming Solaris version.
Hopefully, Mac OS X will be supported in the future.

3. FEATURE : CREATE A CLOCK WITH FLASH AND JAVASCRIPT

-----

Using just Flash and Javascript you can build a real, working clock.
Best part is, you can make it look like anything you like. This feature
teaches you how to control a Flash animation using Javascript. For the
intermediate flash scripter.

5. Cool Sites http://www.flasher.net/zine/3/sites.htm

Cool Flash sites from around the web.

-----

12 Facial Expressions

http://www.bway.net/%7Ebperry/projects/12facial/

Brian's 3 minute Flash movie was a featured finalist in the
recent Real Flash contest. No Flash eye candy here...just a
guy with 12 facial expressions. Done in the style of a 16 mm.
film, the movie is a technical and artistic tour de force. While
we watch a face in the foreground, the background action
uses Monty Python type animation techniques to further
accentuate the absurdity of the narrative. Even the hefty
file (over 700k) downloads and preloads smoothly. A fine,
original piece of flash craftsmanship.

Athens Development

http://www.athensdev.com

Some flashers are just too humble. Joseph has been quietly
visiting Flashpad all the while his company site, Athens
Development, has spoken loudly about its designer's talents.
Visit the site to see an elaborate design of colorful animated
buttons.

The Secret Garden of Mutabor

http://joshua.micronet.it/utenti/mutabory/home.html

The secret garden of Mutabor is in grave danger and you
need to help save it. But how? Follow Youmiko's helpful
instructions. Follow along the adventure as you traverse the
site solving many puzzles created in Flash3. Good artistic and
flash programming abound.

PornBuster Flash Banners (contains sexual explicit content)

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/7484/banner1.html

MaxDude caused quite a ruckus on Flashpad when he
posted a banner created in Flash for a porn site. Regardless
of their subject matter, these banners are very fine examples
of flash illustration. Part comic book, part ad, these banners
entertain and entice the viewer to visit the site. If you find
the subject matter distasteful, then appreciate the artist
behind the pencil. Contrary to posts on Flashpad, these
movies are not traced but meticulously illustrated.

6. Toolbox: Sound Resources http://www.flasher.net/zine/3/toolbox.htm

A round up of useful places to gets sounds for your flash movies

----

Sound Loop Page

http://members.xoom.com/vedstar/loop.html

Need cool, looping drum or bass beats sounds? All looping.
Most small. This is site is a haven for getting some good
beats for those preloaders or splashy intros.
(spotted by E. Czervionke)

Sound Central

http://www.soundcentral.com

As far as we're concerned, this is the Granddaddy of sound
collections. They've got sound files in just about every
format. Plus, they will soon have a section listing
downloadable shareware and freeware sound applications for
a wide variety of operating systems. Our only complaint was
that they didn't have a specific section devoted to drum
loops. Still a giant collection of quality sounds. You'll want to
stop by here first.

Wave Central

http://wavcentral.simplenet.com/index.htm

Over 3 Gigs of sound files here folks! Including a nice fat
section devoted to sound effects with clearly labeled
filenames. If you are looking for a sound to go with that killer
button you just made, this is a great starting point. Another
nice feature is the option to receive a brief email when the
page is updated.

Wave Emporium

http://wav-emporium.forsite.net/

These guys don't have much in the ways of music or event
sounds. We include them here due to their nice collection of
female computer voice wav files. They also have a section
devoted entirely to gun and explosion sounds. A little too
violent for us, but probably a good resource for those of you
wanting to add a little havoc to your Flash movies.

The NoNex-Group

http://www.nonex-group.simplenet.com/index.htm

Who are these guys with the super long URL? Beats the heck
out of us. But they've got something the rest of these sites
lacked; a drum section. And not only that, a nice drum
section. Not too big, but some very nice loops live there,
definitely worth the visit. This is one of the most popular
sound requests on the FlashPad and in FlashChat. Hope it
brings you some inspiration.
