Greetings all,

I've already posted my opinions about doing free work for a profit-earning
company (just say NO!), so I won't belabor that point any more. But I do
want to clear up one term that keeps getting bandied about--pro bono.

>From the dictionary:

pro bono (adjective) - Done without compensation for the PUBLIC GOOD.
^^^^^^^^^^^

If you want to give your work away to a profitable company that is too
cheap to pay because you don't have enough confidence to market yourself or
don't have the business skills to negotiate a deal, that's your problem.
But that would be called "WORKING FOR FREE"; that is not "pro bono" work.
Pro bono work would be donating your talents to a non-profit agency,
charitable organization, or some other worthwhile cause; something that
would benefit the *PUBLIC GOOD*, whether that be people, animals, the
environment, etc.

While Wayne may think he is doing charitable work by rescuing a dying
business, he is not. A business is never considered to be "needy".
Businesses are born and die on a daily basis; that's part of the
free-market economy. Even if the employees are friends of his, it would be
considered a personal favor, not a charitable act. Anyone who would argue
this fact, please consult the IRS first.

But what Wayne is really doing is bartering, thus he is in fact receiving
compensation, even though it in not in monetary form. He is earning the
right to promote himself using the PRIOR-PROVEN SUCCESS of this particular
company's multimedia CD. That is called "taking advantage of an
opportunity"; again, not "pro bono" work (and far different than doing free
work for an XYZ company in the hopes of getting some YET-UNPROVEN
publicity).

Regards,

Michael Liu
