Subject: | Java + Flash = Cross-Platform Multimedia? |

I posted something similar to this when I first joined the list and I
thought I would now repost my question now that I've learned a bit more
about Flash...
My interests lie in not only creating interactive entertaiment (games,
etc.) but in getting these products to the largest possible market. And
that means simultaneous cross-platform releases for the following operating
systems: Windows9x/NTx, Unix/Linux/Solaris/Irix/et.al., and Mac/OSx. While
many developers before have catered to the Windows/Mac platform, there is
the under-developed Unix derivatives. Well, with the advent of the
JavaFlashPlayer it looks as though Flash will be available in at least a
limited form on the Unix plaform. And who knows, with the open file spec,
there may be native players built (i.e. libswf, et. al.).
Well, that was a mouthful... now to my questions/comments. Flash is a great
graphics engine, but has only slightly more interactivity than a good HTML
page. Flash has nowhere near the capabilities of handling programming tasks
such as AI, game logic, etc. So, I hope to programmatically control Flash
through Java (I'm avoiding Director). This can be accomplished right now by
using the FlashJava API, but I can only control a JavaFlashPlayer... which
is Flash2 and slow, to say the least.
Now to my question: is it possible to control the native plug-in with Java?
I've strayed from plug-ins in the past, so I'm not well-versed in things
such as LiveConnect, which I believe may be used for something similar to
this... but then again, that's why I'm asking: because I don't know!
Thanks for the help,
Troy.
