FLASH: ADMIN: Double posts, odd order of messages

Hi Folks...


Just a quick word on double posts and why sometimes messages end up in a

strange order.


* Double posts


These are normally caused by someone's rogue email system sending a second

copy of the email to the list server, or an email address, which manages to

bounce posts back to the list without any of the headers that tell the list

server it's an error. If you are having problems, please drop an email to

ownerchinwag [dot] com

 including the duplicate messages with full headers.


* Strange order of messages


This happens when the load on the mail server is too high. If more than a

set number of messages hit the machine at the same time, any new messages

to the list are queued awaiting processing. This stops the machine

throttling and slowing down to a complete crawl. However, this can mean

that as the machine's load decreases a new message will arrive before the

time comes for the message that has been queued to be processed. There is

probably a way to elegantly handle this, but I haven't come across it yet!

In the meantime virtually all email programs have a sort-by-date function,

which I recommend!
