FLASH: moock f4 detector now works!

thanks everyone for your diligent testing. the flash 4 non-scripted detection

now appears to be working quite happily (i added a preloader to the movie,

preventing the get url actions from being skipped on slow connections).


the new, working version is posted now for download, and the tutorial

explaining how to make an f4 non-scripted detection movie has been updated to

match. visit:

to recap, here's what the non-scripted detection does:

f4 installed --> go to f4 content

f3 installed --> go to f3 content

f2 installed --> go to f2 content

no f installed --> allow browser specific plugin install message* to appear.

if user is idle for 20 seconds, redirect w/ meta tag to non-flash page.


* netscape will always say you don't have flash and offer to take you to the

flash download page. ie on windows attempts to autoinstall and asks users

permission to continue. ie on mac behaves like netscape.


so, should you use this method instead of scripting or aftershock?

i don't think there's a single answer. this method is quite a lot more

predictable/supported/stable than the javascript/vb script methods, not to

mention being easier to implement for non-programmers. however, it doesn't

hide the sort-of-ugly browser "please install flash" messages from the user

(which isn't the most user-friendly experience). it's up to each developer to

assess their needs.
