Michael,
I know that this is NOT based on any copyright text I have come across but I
have seen, and a couple times, used images from other sites on personal
sites to link to them. Every time I have done this I have made a footnote
stating where I got the image, as well I have e-mailed the webmaster of the
linked site to let them know that I have done this. To date, I haven't had
any problems or anyone complain because of this. Mind you I haven't tried
this with a site like Amazon.com. But I have seen a lot of sites that do use
stuff from "official" sites - game sites and product evaluation sites
especially.
Personal sites, I think you should be o.k., a commercial site I would think
might be a bit different.
HTH,
jb

Subject: FLASH: Copyright question
sorry for the cross-post question.
If you want to link to a commercial site, there would be no qualms using a
line of text (ie check out Amazon.com) or a provided banner (like those many
sites ask you to post).
However, what if you wanted to use a picture from their site (a product,
etc.) and link from that? Would I need to get their permission? Like if I
wanted to spotlight a company or product I like and have a direct link from
my site (which is personal) would I be able to use images I pulled from
their site, or would I need permission?
Any answers, thoughts, helpful.
