Marcia,

There are a few ways to avoid the "Loading..." screen. If it's for a corporate site,
there may be some message that they would like to get out to the world. A paragraph
or two of text loads quickly and requires time to read, giving the rest of the movie
time to load. However this can get old if it's a site that people will revisit often
-- y'know how you tune out the safety speech on airplanes.

Another way is to give the user something to do. There have been sites that employ
little games or "mouse candy" that you can play with while the rest of the site
loads -- http://www.yugop.com has a great example. If done well, users may even get
frustrated because the rest of the site loads and they want to keep on playing. This
may not be appropriate for a corporate site though.

The dislike of useless intros and boring loading screens is pretty widespread,
especially on this list, so you may get some more/better suggestions.

HTH,
Randy
