It is very possible, I have created similiar systems (none that I can show
though, sorry)
The biggest thing about this is to create your movie with good object
oriented design in mind.
MCs should be self contained and have all of the scripts they use inside of
them. The same goes for variables, they should be in the MC they are working
with. If you would like to know more information about this methodolgy of
designing Flash movies I will be giving a talk at FF2K in two weeks that
will cover OO design and programming of Flash movies. Also, the Advanced
Flash Techiques class that we teach at Fig Leaf covers these topics and
more.

Subject: FLASH: Senior Actionscript knowledge request?
Before I trying this idea I thought I'd send a post to see if one of the
more senior action script members would reply...
I want to have a user login with a name/password and pull (x)# of variable
fields from a .cfm file and graphically display it in a form (a grocery
list). From that list, I'd like to mouseclick and generate a list that would
graphically display all the different lists from my family, my mom, dad,
sister, and brother's lists from another .cfm file)and then be able to drag
and drop each item into a container..(say, a grocery bag)The bag would hold
and remember all the different varibles) which in turn could be placed into
a bigger container(a box). Each element(grocery list, grocery bag, and box)
would retain it's particular info and have clickable functionality to show
it's contents. What do you think? Am I crazy? I know that there are other
solutions...but Flash is the medium. TIA, Jeff.
