If this boils down to "Can I test a numeric value that may not exist?" then
you may wish to apply a more reasonable strategy, first testing whether
something exists before you then begin to compare its (possibly
non-existent) values.

I may have pulled the wrong intended question from the long description of
a project none of us can see, though.
