well those two packages are actualy my first choices... but if you want to
go down one rung there is Lightwave and 3D Studio... Lightwave is used in
hollywood for real and cartoon Movies and TV Shows... 3D studio is the
standard now for 3D games producers... 3D Studio has been used occasionaly
for TV and Film work but barely a drop in the ocean because its not what its
designed for.

So if you have the money Soft Image... Well at the moment Maya 2 has an edge
with fir.. as in Stewart Little... but for TV Film video have a GOOd look at
Lightwave and for Games have a GOOD look at 3D Studio.

The hardware you are on is also a point. I am assuming you are on Mac
because of the packages you have looked at... I know the Lightwave prot to
Mac never worked, but its avalible on every other platform... from Amiga to
SGI.
