FLASH: working with variables

I have attempted setting a variable in the (on release) action of a button. 

I just made up a variable name as an expression and then entered a string 

literal expression. The problem is when I attempt to change that variables 

value with another button it retains the first value. Any idea how I can get 

this to work - I'm stumped.
