Flashers,
Well, I guess I can throw in my .02 since I went through a similar debate a
few months ago. You can see the title we decided on in my sig.
It's a tough call, as most pixel monkeys and codewhore geeks don't put much
value into titles. On the other hand, some clients you will meet do.
Unfortunately, in our industry, age old titles like VP of Business
Development, IT Manager or Traffic Manager don't really apply. The market is
newer and we are expected to strike a balance somewhere between traditional
titles and non-traditional roles.
What do I do? Well, my core responsibilities are Creative Direction,
Internet Strategy, UI and Human Factors Design, Information Architecture,
Interactive Design, Marketing Direction, eCommerce and a few others that
I'll leave out to keep the list from getting too long. Basically, if it
deals with the internet, it's my responsibility.
In addition, I'm responsible to act as Branding Police, Brand Positioning
and UI and Human Factors Design for our software to make sure it marries our
external efforts at Branding -- consistency is key!
So, after much debate and sifting through titles that weren't inclusive
enough, like Information Architect, UI Director, Pixel Pusher, Technology
Strategist, and those which held too tightly to the print world to make my
colleagues comfortable, like Creative Director, it was decided that my title
would be iDirector.
It gets very curious looks and makes for interesting conversation. It's
flexible and could swing to Internet Director, Information Director,
Interactive Director, Interface Director, etc.
And when asked, I usually reply that it stands for Internet Director. More
often than not, the vast majority of people can get what I do from Internet
Director.
However, on the occasion that I'm asked what I do, I simply tell them that
I'm in charge of directing our internal and external efforts for the
internet. It's pretty broad and rather all-inclusive, but then again, so is
my job.
HTH!
