I had a similar problem in Flash3 once. I solved it by having a movie clip
that would display a stage-sized invisible button over everything else for
several frames every time the user hit one of the many buttons (in your
case, tick marks). The movie clip was only a few frames long and would
automatically return to an empty frame after displaying the large button.
The large button had no actions, but blocked all other buttons while it was
present. There are probably more elegant ways to do this with ActionScript,
but this is actually a pretty simple solution.
