Depends entirely on what you want to do with it. Many use Soundforge for
recording, editing, and for format conversions. Acid is good for composing
songs and loops. CakeWalk is strong on MIDI composition and also allows you
to multitrack acoustically recorded sounds and music. For basic recording
of single audio tracks, editing, processing (normalizing, compressing,
format conversion) CoolEdit2000 is great and a real bargain ($69 US, I
believe).
