That clarifies the issue. I still may end up doing this in Director 7 due to
the complex interactions, however it is worth a second look at Flash.

Edit Center changes the center of the instance, not of the original symbol.
To use Edit Center, make the change to the first instance before adding
additional keyframes for the tween. After you edit the center, you can add
the later keyframe and that second instance will retain the edited center
position. Then add your motion guide, add the the motion tween, lock the
starting and ending instances to the motion guide, and all should be fine.
if you need to permanently change the center within the symbol, go to
symbol edit mode, select all elements (might need to use Edit Multiple
Frames plus Onion Skin All plus unlock all layers plus Select All) and drag
them to the correct location so that the crosshair in the center of the
edit stage is where you want it in relation to the elements.
