First, thanks to all who responded -- this is a very informative
thread. Some of the methods are still difficult for this learner to
comprehend unless I sit down and work through them (time, time, I
just need more of it).

I'll explain again my application. I need numbered or lettered
symbols on a map that refer to an external list (e.g., hotels,
museums, frozen yoghurt shops). The symbols are usually quite simple:
coloured circles, hexagons, etc. The maps are mostly static, no
animation, at most a little layer switching.

Marc Hoffman's solution looked the most interesting until the Jolly
Good Lesson (JGL) by JGL came in.

My main concern is the most compact file. I was immediately aware
that the break-apart would consume more space.

Maybe a simple test of the different solutions can be done by an
adventuresome expert to show which consumes the least amount of file
bytes. Just a suggestion, but I bet many would find this useful.
