Subject: RE: FLASH: symbol instances problem

No problem, I'm the first to admit when I'm wrong. Usually ;)

Your example about all this caused me to look at symbols 'in yet again' a
whole new way. The embedded symbol thing is very useful for minimizing size.

I could be wrong about this, but my developing habit with flash has been to
just make a symbol out of everything that I draw, import etc. I was mainly
doing that to keep from mistakenly not naming graphics before I applied a
tween. Because before, my library would fill up with symbols named tween 1,
tween 2 etc. After a while, it got outta hand and when housecleaning time
came, I shrugged, trying to figure out what the heck 100 or so symbols are
because they aren't properly named. I hate tasks that shouldn't be there in
the first place. I try to get someone else to do them. After a while, they
catch on knowing they are doing that due to my sloppy programming . . .

Again - I have been shown a new way of managing symbols. File size is KING,
even with the HighBandwidth that the future promises for all. We are going
to want to continue to push even more content and graphics.

Thanks for the know-how, Marc. I appreciate it.

thanks for being so gracious about it. It was a good discussion to have on
the list; took me awhile to get straight about how to maximize my use of
symbols. Now when I build stuff, I take quite a bit of time to figure out a
heirarchy of shared components, so I can establish a symbol-nesting order
and start building from the lowest level on up.
