Sure, create a square, rectangle or polygon of your choice and either fill
it with a 50% (or whatever strength you want) colour then
Modify>Curves>Soften Edges then with the selection tool marquee the area you
wish to delete and hit delete.

The other re-usable way is as above but fill with an opaque colour hit F8
make a symbol of it....then you can adjust its alpha setting to whatever you
want.

Note: Don't go mad with the number of steps in the soften edges as this will
up your file size.

HTH

need to create a non circular drop shadow ???? (you know the one you used
to make in Photoshop with the feather and fill tool, then moving it down and
over a few pixels_) I've been able to create them fine using a circular
shape but what if I wanted to make a drop shadow that covers two edges of a
rectangle???? Has anyone figured out a good way to do this,(without
importing bitmaps that is_) Well just curious what this list has come up
with.
