btw.
the trick *doesn't* involve alphas.
When I initially put this together,
I was convinced you could do it that
way, but you can't.
It's three *nested* mc's not three *layered* mc's
That makes it trickier to work with, but...

I think the color map is a bitmap
that they stole from another interface
and they're doing all the real work with
code. damn fine job too.

Ah, yes. Here's the deal.
Flash 4's ActionScript does not have a native Set Property / color method.
So, by this I would say that no, it's not possible.
However, some of the more clever workarounds involve using the Alpha
property. The trick is making three or more movie clips of the same object,
and by setting _alpha, you can control opacity of the primary colors, thus
creating "dynamic color" set through scripting.
It's not easy, and I've never done it. If someone wants to make a tutorial
or sample on this, I'm sure many would like to see it. All I can show you is
a finished SWF that someone made that does just this:
