Yes, the variables are local to wherever they are set. You can either
change it to Set Variable: "/:stopfilm" = True (which sets the variable on
the main timeline) or you can refer to it from the main timeline by using
the path to it, like so:

If(/mcInstanceName:stopfilm = True)

There is no way to set a variable to be "global" but I usually set them all
on the main timeline, or within a movie clip that always exists.
