That, my friend, is the eternal question.

Here are a few basic methods:
Compress your images as much as asthetics will allow (in
Fireworks/Imageready and/or in your publish settings)
Remove any unnecessary keyframes or tweening
Compress any soundfiles as much a possible
Economize your overall design
