Surely... try http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/ and click on the

"Shockwave Distribution" article.


As Ajay notes it's easy to count some things, such as the 23 million Flash

downloads from the Macromedia site alone in 1997, but harder to count other

things, such as the number of replacement engines and upgrades. (It's even

hard to tell how many computers there are in use in the world.)


Figuring that Disney and Microsoft and RealNetworks and AOL also distribute

Flash online, and that most Macs and PCs have Shockwave on their OS discs,

and that there's also distribution on the browser CDs too, I've seen

installed base estimates from ten to eighteen million.


Then again, because it's easy to designate alternate content with

Aftershock, the point's a bit moot, too.


(If you're measuring the current technographics of a particular

sub-audience, then you can make a page now which does a Flash-detection

routine and which submits the result to a CGI routine on your server. This

will let you measure the current abilities of the current audience.)
