Hi Jenny

What about using the the drop-down layer menu function to turn a layer

into a guides layer. You can draw anything you want as guide on that

layer. Not just straight lines but any shape. You can even have several

different guide layers. If you want the guides a distinctive color, use

the same layer drop-down menu to define whether everything on that guide

layer is red, blue, green, etc. I've found this procedure quite helpful.
