hi. IMHO if you plan to become a flash developer then you are going to
have to learn to hate IE for mac. The single largest problem with IE/mac
and flash is that microsoft has provided absolutely *no* mechanism
whatsoever for flash movies to communicate with the browser. That means
that you cannot view movies which use fscommands and javascript in IE/mac.
Microsoft has shown no intention of fixing this either. FScommands
basically allow you to write your own scripts which can then be used with
your flash movie. A lot of advanced effects require this functionality
to work, and as a result they will not work in IE/mac. In addition to this
huge problem, IE/mac also provides no way determining whether or not a user
has the flash plug-in installed, which is another nuisance.
Personally I don't think anyone with a mac should use IE, even if only as a
pressure tactic to encourage microsoft to make the browser work properly on
this platform. Oh sure, they've given us the nifty print previews, but
what does it matter if we can print a page with nice little margins if the
page won't work the way they're supposed to anyway? <sigh>
I've currently got three versions of Netscape on my computer (3,4,4.5) and
the last time any of them have crashed was months ago. What version system
software are you using? Netscape shouldn't be crashing for you, and I
think your best course of action here is really just to get NN to work
properly. Update to the latest version of the browser and try making a
minimal set of extensions to make sure that the crashing isn't caused by an
extension conflict. You should also check out the known bugs and
incompatibilites for the browser version you're trying to run. You should
be able to use NN without it crashing. If java causes problems for you,
you can just go into your preferences and disable it. I end up doing that
a lot of the time just because those little java marquees annoy the heck
outta me. I keep my computer running almost 24 hours a day, with netscape
open at least half of that time and yet I can count the number of times the
computer has crashed since the beginning of the year on my fingers.
Good luck,
Karen
