Matt:

In Photoshop: Select the area that you want to be seen (not transparent),
save the selection as alpha channel (make sure it is the only alpha, as
png will ignore all but the first), swing the mids toward black in the
levels (lighten mids - the png in flash will be much darker then it looks
in Photoshop) and then save as png.

On certain backgrounds, with thousands of colors, you may see the alpha
channel in flash (as a slight discoloration with lines). If you find this
happening, you can break the image apart once in flash, then use the magic
wand to select the alpha area and delete it.
