This is not something new at all.
There are many sites who have been doing this long before Flash 3 was
released.

What he said was that you can't do this in Flash you also need
JavaScript.
I and others use JavaScript for many things but in this case Movie Clip
logic will work quite well and you do not need JavaScript to control the
animation as he did.
Many animations require JavaScript; an accurate Flash clock is one
example.

Furthermore his example only works with version 4 browsers and errors or
hangs with version 3 browsers. But to be fair there is JavaScript that
works with Netscape 3 and IE3 for Win32 browsers. JavaScript is used to
control Flash movies using Flash Methods (FS Command) but not all
browsers have this capability,
