In the MC, make a new layer. Copy the largest graphic from the original
layer into frame 1 of the new layer. Now you can align things on the stage.
When you're done, either delete the added layer from the MC or convert it
to a Guide layer.
I usually create a MC by first drawing the largest element on the stage,
then using F8 to make it a symbol, then working in symbol edit to create
the rest of the symbol (be it a button, movie clip, or graphic). The
element on stage will automatically update as you change the symbol in edit
mode.
