I'm also learning, but I'm pretty sure that MODIFY>MOVIE (ctrl - M) allows

you to set the background color ONCE for the entire master movie.  I don't

believe you can change it, however, you can make a layer with a rectangle

filled with whatever color you want full screen, and place it under all the

other layers to give the effect of background color changes.  Just modify

the instance of the rectangle 'stage' color at the keyframes when you want

it to change.
