hm, my guess would be: take a video of a candle flame, reduce it to
individual frames (delete 3/4s of the frames or more :), trace bitmap each
frame - reduce the number of colors to 1, and number of curves to an
absolute minimum (would give those circles on the bottom, i think), sometime
or another split the image into 2 clips (they might be identical, or just
cut apart, I don't know). One image is below the other (layerwise) with the
alpha set so they blend where they cross. Then just run the two movie clips.
Then the buttons just color the movie clips (like the coloring book
tutorials) or switch to a different clip (for more wind).

That's a basic idea of course... there's a lots more work in that than I'm
implying - it's a great job! I'd love to see a tutorial as well :) We've
been working on something similar and this is an awesome application -
reducing to two colors and then setting the alpha so you get shading (and
even some black from the background) works really well to keep it more
naturalistic (less "cartoony") as well as the motion. I wonder how many
frames it took and whether it's all frame by frame animation or there's
shape tweening?
