Simplest:

set appPath = the moviepath & "ACROREAD.EXE"
set docPath = the moviepath & "MYDOC.PDF"
open docPath with appPath

Opens new instance on Win for each doc, can't
open multiple docs on Mac.

For viewing withing the director stage:
There's a free active-x control, check
macromedia.com/support/director, windows only
Also a few x-platform pdf xtras, check
updatestage.com (they have different
capabilities/prices so recs. depend on project).
