I really can't say anything of any substance since I am under NDA, but rest
assured that Macromedia has heard the cry of us Actionscripters and are
reacting accordingly. :-)

Yeah - seriously. We learned that one the hard way (about illus_8)!
Now it's my turn! I have been doing some neat stuff with Flash scripting
*but* in addition to the fact that the language needs to grow, there are a
few things that *have* to happen if Flash scripting is ever going to have a
future. I think it's wonderful that Macromedia is approaching Flash in this
way, but there are some definite use-ability issues that need to be
addressed:
1. Allow for open-document scripting. Those tiny little fields in the
Action window are *HORRIBLE* for trying to do any complex scripting. I find
myself having to write it in Notepad and then paste it in. Need to actually
be able to *see* my code.
2. Really need to grow the internal functions. It's really weird that I
would have to set the Yscale (and determine it first for that matter) rather
than simply setting the height of the image, when that's all I want to do.
So, the ability to set basic properties would be good.
3. Should really be able to create a routine library in an open window and
call functions from there rather than having to lay each "routine" one out
in the timeLine of a "library" movieClip. It's inefficient, unintuitive,
and awkward.
4. Should have basic forms controls such as selectable-area listboxes.
Finally, I would just request that Macromedia take another look at Lingo and
the conventions of multimedia scripting set forth in Director! Alot of us
aleady know it (Lingo) and it's a pretty solid scripting language. The
conventions of scripting Lingo are a lot better too (in the ways defined
above) and would be a nice change to Flash. I had a chance to play with
drumbeat and I found it's approach to creation of ASP to be similar to what
I am seeing in Flash. It's just as limiting and awkward with a lot of the
same sorts of issues (e.g. small windows, no direct access to the code,
etc). I hope that doesn't mean this is Macromedia's planned direction for
scripting facilities in future versions of their products (?).
Waa, waaa, waaa!
I'm done.

flash 5 wish.
howsabout an export feature to illustrator 8 or 9.
sometimes you want to print, and you just can't because of lack of
compatibility.
also, beatnik support.
