FLASH: Button goes alpha

I created a button, put it on the stage and it goes to about 50%

alpha, now I know your saying, 'did you set alpha when you created the

button'

no i did not, there is an another object on the stage that has a 50%

alpha

but its on a different layer, what am i missing here.
