Nearly everything has been answered, just my thoughts:

I'm using Director since v6, for multimedia CDs. I nearly started using

Flash 4 and Dir 7 for the web the same time, and beside that I already knew

Dir, Flash is much more easier. I only made some tests in Dir for Internet,

and I think it's only worth using (and buying) when you'd like to make

multiuser apps / sophisticated games. Also, the downloading is a big

drawback, along with some others...

I too think (hope), that Dir / Flash will fuse, at least in the newer Flash

versions.

But for CD/DVD Dir is still *the* program.

Books:

 a lot of for beginers

 Bruce Epsteins Nutshell duo is great, and very useful for advanced users
