FLASH: newbie's question

I want to use the set property action.  Can i use it with any kind of symbol

or with a movie clip only?

i put the symbol name in the target box in the action window and nothing

happens. when i put the instance name of a movi clip it works. so, how can i

change properties of any symbol, is it posible?
