I'm not sure which way that particular project should go, Stace, but one
key indicator for SMIL is if you need to have video embedded within the
presentation: SMIL does this, SWF does not.

If you have a single long audio sourcefile (like a speech), then that might
also point to RealPlayer techniques, although it's possible to compress a
gigumendous audio file inside a SWF. (I'd try to consider branching among
multiple movies, though, or even using any audio stream and having the
browser synch to the visuals somehow.)

Generally, if you can, then SWF has a larger base and is easier to get and
doesn't have as many server and file requirements. The Real material does
specialize in single long streams, though, so it might be more appropriate
in that case.

(Hmm, just in case, if this might be directed viewing in realtime rather
than a prerecorded monologue, then the Shockwave Multiuser Server might
help, particularly when combined with the HearMe realtime conversation
servers... you can configure things in several ways, such as everyone
hearing the presenter in realtime, and seeing their browser move to new
pages when the presenter dictates, and a moderator filtering realtime
questions to the presenter. This may be more advanced than what that client
is picturing, though.)
