A tracing of a complex bitmap that looks pretty much like the original is
going to be larger than the original, because it will have numerous curves
and fills. Tracing gives you three main benefits: 1) with a simple bitmap
(one with high contrast and simple shapes), the vector version will likely
be smaller in file size than the bitmap; 2) the vector version will be
scalable with no loss of image quality; 3) the traced look can be a nice
effect in some instances.
The settings you use will vary depending on the nature of the image:
contrast and complexity, plus how much you can simplify it and still have
it be recognizable to the eye.
