Sure, in Ill 8.0 when you export as Photoshop, there is an option like

"export all layers" which will only export the currently visible layers.


Don't remember if earlier versions could export as PSD, what I used to do

to was have "dummy" objects outside of the image and crop the photoshop

file after assembling the layers from separate exports.
