it's a 15x15 pixel square with 100% alpha. i just don't think the special
effect can give a good color fade. i set it up using a bunch of alphas and
the blend is really smooth, but like you know, SLOW when i animate it.

If the movie clip takes up a large portion of the screen, the fades could
be making too much demand on the computer processors (CPU and video). If
the object is less than 100% alpha, and there's a complex background (such
as a bitmap), that will also add a lot of extra rendering computations to
the effect and may slow things down. Sometimes a faster frame rate will
smooth things out (but not often); sometimes a shorter tween (fewer frames)
will give a better illusion (remember, it's all about illusion, not
photorealism). Using a lot of alpha adjustments will almost certainly slow
things down more. I think your approach is probably the best one. If all
else fails, you may need to rethink the purpose of the effect and find
another effect that accomplishes the same thing with less processing power.
