Hi,
I don't know anything about director, so I don't know if it's similar, but
you can replace symbols on the timeline in Flash without deleting.
Doubleclick on the symbol you want and make sure you're on the "definition
tab". From the list there, select the symbol you want to exachange it with
and either doubleclick or push the button at the bottom left that looks like
it has two arrows going in a circle. If you've successfully changed the
symbol, the new one will have a black dot next to it on the left showing
that it's the current one. There may be some limitations in what kind of
symbols you can exchange (if it needs a movie clip, for example).
This is very handy for copy/pasting symbols with similar scripts etc. Choose
duplicate, then choose the symbol and exchange the graphic element, for
example :)
hth,
Laura
