More likely something in the lab set up (like they may be keeping the
browser on a server volume or have security software running that slows it
down or don't have much system Ram and have VM turned way up, etc. Academic
labs are rarely tuned for speed, more often throttled down for stability or
security, or set up on a shoe-string with minimal hardware configurations
(RAM).

Swfs play ~ the same speed on the G3 450s and the P3 600s in _my_ lab,
anyway, as well as ~the same speed on the G3 233 and Celeron 366 at my home
studio.
