FLASH: Scroll bars and text fields

I've tried to create a text field [Variable name = Feature] with

scrolling and I've set properties 

Feature.scroll = 1 [a value not an expression] and Feature.maxscroll = 11, 


but it doesn't seem to create a scroll - able text field. 


What am I doing wrong and what do I need to do to fix it?  The text field

appears full length and extends way off the Flash movie in both preview

and in publish.

BTW, the manual is rather opaque on this subject.
