not stupid at all. Director files CAN stream, but the author has to do some
work to have a really effective streaming movie.

See above. Many people don't do the work. We have made it much easier in d7.

Flash files will stream into the flash asset inside director quite easily
if they are left as externally linked media, but then they won't benefit
from directors internal compression. This is similiar to how director
handles linked media of other types, such as .gif, .jpg, etc.(although
those formats have compression anyway), or even .txt or .rtf
