Illustrator does not support alpha channels unless you use a third part
plug-in, sorry can't remember the name of it though. You may find info
either on the CD which Illustrator shipped on or the Adobe site.

I can just hear all of the Freehand users out there shouting 'but Freehand
supports alpha channels'
