Now here is one thing you can do with Director 7, though it's currently
undocumented. Create a one-bit mask of any shape and a MIAW (Movie in a
Window). Your MIAW can be set to only show pixels whose mask bit is set. You
can have masks of any size, including discontinuous masks such as objects
with holes or islands in them. You can switch masks realtime, too! And,
yeah, it's crossplatform, at least as far as Mac and PC's go. No alpha
channel on the mask at this time, however.
