If you're having troubles reading the tutorials downloaded from various sites, it's probably because the Type and Creator attributes are not saved within the ZIP file (or they were never there to begin with). You can open any valid FLA by changing the File > Open dialog box to use "All Files" instead of "All Formats", or you can change the Type and Creator attributes for your FLA and/or SWF files by yourself. Here's a message I sent out a couple of weeks ago on this:

People who are looking for a way to automatically change the type/creator of PC-created files for the Macintosh should investigate the program Typer. It's distributed by Antimony Software (http://www.antimonysoftware.com) and is freeware.

Typer comes with a set of default file changes, based on the extension found on the file you want to change. If you want to change your FLA files to be automatically recognized by Flash, choose the file extension of .FLA, a type of SPA<space> (where <space> is the space bar, not the word <space>) and a creator of MFL2. To change your SWF files to be readable in the player, choose the file extension of .SWF, the type of SWFL and the creator of SWF2.

Antimony Software also makes a program called Mizer that claims to speed up download of web pages, but I haven't tried that program yet.
