What you describe is possible. There are couple of things that would
contribute there:
-- Yes, on a QT4-enhanced system, you can have QuickTime render SWF 3 content.
-- When you download a file to the Mac, it may have FILETYPE/CREATOR info
attached, or it may only have a file extension. Different systems have
different ways of recognizing files.
-- When you doubleclick a SWF it will often pull up a Flash player (not
the Flash authoring application). Some systems can be set up to call
QuickTime instead.
Rephrased, what you saw can be seen on some-but-not-all computers, for
some-but-not-all file transfers.

Well, if your modem is streaming, then that's an additional processor
drain. But note that the browsers themselves are a processor drain...
challenging pieces can often play faster as a Projector than as a guest in
the browser.
