Subject: RE: FLASH: advanced scrolling bar & why not to use scenes

The scrolling bar at Napkin design is kind of strange, and appears to be
different from the slider menu I created, however, the idea is similar. If
you want to check out my slider menu, its available at
www.figleaf.com/development/flash4/slider.swf and the FLA is at
www.figleaf.com/development/flash4/slider.zip

Right now the best way to learn scripting is to take apart other peoples
code, such as mine and John Cs, and figure out how we did things. YOu can
find Johns work at www.flashbible.com/members. MIne doesn't have a central
repository yet, but I recommend www.flashkit.com since many of my FLAs will
be up there soon.

As for doing e-commerce in Flash, you may want to get the scripting aspect
much more under your belt before you try to tackle ecommerce. For an
E-Commerce app you would *at least* need a database system such as MsSQL 7,
Oracle 8i, MySQL, PostgresSQL, etc.(Access will do for a *small* business,
but not for an extended ammount of time) as well as a middleware solution
such as ASP, PHP, Coldfusion, or Tango. There are no real standards on
creating ecommerce with flash, so its pretty much up to you to design the
app from top to bottom. If you get some people who know how to do
traditional ecommerce, converting the front end to flash isn't all that
difficult if you know flash scripting well.

The scenes problem has to do mainly with Flash 3. There used to be wierd
problems with using scenes and tell targets, and in fact you still can screw
things up by attempting to tell target across scenes. HOwever, with the
addition of the duplicate movie action you can now create MCs at runtime
when all of the scenes have been compressed into one. This allows you to do
such things as multi-scene movies that have a shared sound track that you
can turn off and on.

Subject: FLASH: advanced scrolling bar & why not to use scenes

Hi all,

I posted this question before, but I only got one response regarding the
e-commerce (thanks a lot:-))
I really need some expert advise, I am pretty sure Branden knows how to help
me. (Hi Branden)

Now I have four questions:

1. How can I create a smooth scrolling horizontal menu like the one at
(www.napkindesign.com) with button assigned into the scrolling bar?

2. What is the best/easiest way to learn the scripting for that type of
application? Are there any good tutorials or books on scripting for Flash 4.

3. What is the best/easiest way of designing an e-commerce site within Flash
4. Do I need any other products, besides Flash 4? Who could help me
designing or teaching me how to do e-commerce in Flash. I am willing to pay
some money if I have to.

4. I've read that you should avoid using too many scenes. Why and what
should I use instead? Is it a question of file size
or navigation?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Michael
